President’s Message

Hi everyone,

I want to start off by thanking you for your support last December. I can’t believe it’s been almost 6 months since I began my new role as your union president.

I’m very proud of some of the issues we have been able to resolve since my term began. In my opinion, the biggest accomplishment has been the re- establishment of our OPSSU office at Lesmill. We are temporarily located on the third floor in the negotiations unit and if you drop by you will usually find Tim and/or I hard at work. I look forward to finally moving to our permanent office this month, which will be located on the mezzanine. OPSSU has a strong presence at head office once again. Continue Reading

OPSSU supports striking Peel Region CAS workers

October 19, 2016 – The Ontario Public Service Staff Union stands in solidarity with Peel Region Children’s Aid Society workers, members of CUPE 4914, as they enter their fifth week on strike.

The Peel CAS workers have been on strike since September 18, 2016. They have been without a collective agreement since March 31, 2016. The union was shocked to discover that, as their strike deadline loomed, their employer contacted former staff “to offer them extremely large sums of money to cross picket lines in the event of a lockout or strike,” according to their local president, Sonia Yung. “The amounts of money on offer are far in excess of what it would take to resolve any and all outstanding issues between Peel CAS and the union,” she added.

OPSSU supports Essex County library workers on strike

October 19, 2016 – The Ontario Public Service Staff Union stands in solidarity with the library workers of Essex County, members of CUPE 2974, during their fourth month on strike.

The library workers have been on strike since June 25, 2016. They were forced out on strike to protect their sick leave plan. Essex County Council has insisted on concessions to the workers’ sick leave provisions, despite having lost an arbitration on the same issue, and despite both parties acknowledging that there has been no issue to date with employees’ use of the current sick leave plan.

OPSSU stands in solidarity with striking BCNU staff

October 19, 2016 – The Ontario Public Service Staff Union stands in solidarity with the staff of the BC Nurses Union, members of MoveUP, who have been on strike for almost three months. As union staff ourselves, we understand the important work the BCNU staff do with their hard-working members, because we do the same work with the members of OPSEU.

We support MoveUP’s demands for a fair contract without concessions, their flex hour proposal to address workload issues, access to medical and family responsibility leave, and no rollback in their existing benefits.
